“Beyond Heritage”
Rayleen reflects and weaves through RHAD’s vast portfolio of work from the last 15 years, connecting both their modern and heritage projects. As part of this reflection, Rayleen discusses her contemplations about heritage buildings and what preserving them ultimately means. She dives deeper into her thoughts and rationale about what we are actually trying to save, which may not actually be the buildings. This discussion of her approach goes full circle into their overarching principles of design that guide every project within the office, whether modern or heritage.
Rayleen Hill, NSAA, MRAIC, is the Founding Principal Architect of RHAD Architects, established in 2010. She graduated from the Dalhousie Architecture School in 2006 and remains active in the school as a periodic Sessional Instructor and guest reviewer. RHAD is an award-winning studio that believes architecture shapes the backdrop of our lives. Its influence extends beyond a physical structure into the environment it informs, the lives it impacts, and the community it truly empowers. It’s not just about the obvious spaces but also the spaces in between. RHAD’s projects span a breadth of scales, types, and budgets, with their commonality being to elevate the quality of the space for users with meaningful design interventions.
