Quilting has a long history in Nova Scotia, no more so than in Lunenburg County where generations of women recycled fabrics and old clothing into bed coverings to keep their families warm. Although labour intensive, quilting was a creative outlet for many women, who used quilts to bring colour, comfort, and cheer to their homes.

These days, centuries-old patterns like this one (which I’ve renamed the Lunenburg Puzzle Quilt) are being revisited for their graphic punch. And quiltmaking is much easier than it used to be! There are lots of little tricks to make cutting and sewing quicker and more precise. You’ll have a quilt top to show off in no time!

Students should bring: (LSA will have some rotary cutters, cutting mats, and quilting rulers for students who don’t have these items)

  • Sewing Machine
  • Rotary cutter with sharp blade
  • Cutting mat
  • Large quilting rulers (6” by 24”) for measuring and cutting
  • Cotton thread
  • Fabric yardage – 100% cotton or cotton/linen recommended. This should be washed and ironed before the first class.
    • 4 yards main fabric (dark) (or 3.75 metres)
    • 3 yards for an accent fabric (lighter) (or 2.75 metres)
