Sunday Slabs & Sculpting: Ceramics

Sundays, March 22, 29 + April 12 – 26 (No class on Easter Sunday, April 5)
This workshop explores the world of functional sculptures where you’ll create unique sculptures and integrate them into functional vessels. We will be discussing different approaches to sculpting and hand-building, as well as, refining your pieces. Through live demonstrations and hands-on work time, you’ll receive personalized guidance on how to bring your project to life. Participants with experience will be able to push your boundaries a little further, while those without experience are welcome to explore what clay can do!
This workshop is comprised of 5 working sessions (3hrs each) PLUS one final pick-up day (1hr). We will be using a white stoneware clay.
Students should bring:
- Apron (aprons can always be purchased at the LSA)
- Note book
- Pen/pencil
- Water bottle
- Label any personal tools you might bring to use

Marla Benton
Marla Benton is a ceramic artist and educator based in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. Her practice spans both studio-based work and large-scale community projects, with a strong emphasis on creating interactive art that invites personal connection.
Originally from a small town in Ontario, Benton discovered her passion for clay while studying at the Ontario College of Art & Design. She later transferred to the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, where she earned her B.F.A degree in ceramics. Benton went on to complete a second degree in Education at Nipissing University.
Her work has been exhibited and published in both Canada and the United States. Benton has received several prestigious grants, including Canada Council Creation Grants, ArtsNS Grants, and ArtsSmarts Grants from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. She has also participated in numerous artist residencies, across Canada, and has been awarded a residency in France later this year.
