“What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You… or someone you love.”
Description:
Sue Bookchin, Executive Director of Be the Peace Institute will talk with us about gender-based violence and what we can all do to “be the peace” in our communities. For 10 years, Be the Peace Institute has been engaged in initiatives and advocacy to change the patterns and forces that allow relational violence to persist. We all have a role to play in community safety. Knowing the signs, what to look for, and how to safely intervene, can save someone’s life.
About Sue Bookchin:
Sue started her career as a nurse, with degrees in nursing and public health from Columbia University. After moving to Nova Scotia almost 40 years ago, Sue had a consulting business doing leadership development in health care and also with small businesses in strategic planning, organizational development and conflict resolution. She also became a stained glass artist.
After volunteering and serving on the Board of Second Story Women’s Centre, Sue was co-coordinator of their Be the Peace Project for 3 years. And in 2015 she co-founded Be the Peace Institute with colleagues Helen Lanthier and Nancy Ross.
Be the Peace Institute is a community-based non-profit dedicated to addressing gender-based violence at its roots in patriarchy, misogyny, colonialism and white supremacy embedded in our systems, institutions and mindsets. Our aim is peace, equity and gender justice for all.
