Wednesday to Friday, August 13 – August 15, 2025
10:00am – 4:00pm

In this lively three (3) day workshop we’ll learn how to use a simple wooden punch needle and yarn to create anything from rugs to pillows to stunning wall hangings. Rug hooking has a rich history in Atlantic Canada and using a punch needle is one of the easiest and most satisfying ways to go about it.

We’ll explore the most common backings, frames and types of fibre that can be used so you can find a system that works for you. We’ll start by making a small piece together on the first day and then move on to making a pillow or a wall hanging that students can individually design themselves, with as much or as little help from Alison as desired.

Alison Mitchell

Alison Mitchell is a multi-disciplinary Lunenburg-based artist. Her paintings, fibre art, and collages feature simplified, stylized subjects in vibrant but limited colour palettes. Most of Alison’s most recent work are “yarn paintings” that she makes with wool and a wooden rug hooking tool called a punch needle. The daughter of a devoted rug hooker, Alison is endlessly fascinated by Nova Scotia’s rich rug hooking tradition and loves exploring new ways put her own modern spin on this sustainable Atlantic Canadian craft. She loves teaching students of all ages about the creative possibilities of the materials around them – especially if that material is hot pink yarn.

When not making or teaching art, you can find Alison leading historic walking tours of Lunenburg and teaching international law at Queen’s University.
