Alison Mitchell
Monday to Friday, July 7 – July 11, 2025
1:00pm – 4:00pm

Join local artist and Mom, Alison Mitchell, for a week of fun and creative discovery. This workshop, for youth ages 9 – 12, is perfect for keen young artists who are eager to experiment with new tools and techniques, unleash their creativity, and make beautiful things of which they can be proud.

We’ll explore a variety of art forms and crafts, from punch needle rug hooking to embroidery, sketching, and painting. Alison will provide warm and gentle instruction, but the focus is on empowering the kids to discover their own artistic voice and vision. Each participant will walk away with a variety of colourful, one-of-a-kind creations, and hopefully tons of enthusiasm about their artist potential.

Students Should Bring:

  • A water bottle.
  • Snacks are welcome.

Check out the Town of Lunenburg’s PRO Kids Program for financial assistance if needed.

Alison Mitchell

Alison Mitchell is a multi-disciplinary Lunenburg-based artist. Her paintings, fibre art, and collages feature simplified, stylized subjects in vibrant but limited colour palettes. Most of Alison’s most recent work are “yarn paintings” that she makes with wool and a wooden rug hooking tool called a punch needle. The daughter of a devoted rug hooker, Alison is endlessly fascinated by Nova Scotia’s rich rug hooking tradition and loves exploring new ways put her own modern spin on this sustainable Atlantic Canadian craft. She loves teaching students of all ages about the creative possibilities of the materials around them – especially if that material is hot pink yarn.

When not making or teaching art, you can find Alison leading historic walking tours of Lunenburg and teaching international law at Queen’s University.
