Let there be Light: Oil Painting – EVENING
Registration
Amy Funk
Mondays, January 12 – February 9, 2026
5:00pm – 8:00pm
Delve into the darkness and find the light on your canvas in this oil painting class for all levels of learning. Interpreting photos onto canvas, we will spend our time focusing on paint application. We will break down each element within our compositions and abstracting them into value description and directional light ~ interpreting how our eyes see these factors, interacting moment by moment to make a whole.
Beginners and intermediate students welcome.
Students should bring: (please read materials list carefully and come with the right brushes)
- Oil paint:You will need a minimum of one black, one white, and one of each basic colour (ie. one yellow, one, red, one blue, one green, one purple). Please keep in mind the classical palette of photo realist still life when choosing your paint. All students will need Paynes grey and Naples yellow. These two colours help immensely. Other highly recommended colours are: Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Naples Yellow Red, Terre Verte, Sap Green, Viridian Hue, Cerulean Blue, Phthalo Blue, Magenta, Cobalt Violet
- Mason jar: for solvent ~ with lid
- IPad to view the photo you are painting from. This is optional but the iPad is backlit and some may prefer that. There will also be printouts available.
- Brushes: You will need SMALL brushes, ( I use acrylic brushes for oil myself). We have no need for brushes any wider than half an inch for the large! And we want a variety of tips ~ pointy, flat, angled, the works, but students MUST have at least one short square tip with right angles! Also – soft is the name of the game. We do not want harsh-haired or bristled brushes – they are too scratchy for what we are trying to achieve. Please see the attached photo for reference – use my hand for size reference. Brushes make an enormous difference. You will make your life much easier by selecting the right brushes. DeSerres in Halifax has a great selection and the brushes I use are only $5.99. The brand is Royal & Langnickel. But the dollar store right in Lunenburg has a decent selection as well!

Amy Funk
Amy Funk was born in BC and started painting as a very young child. Funk studied fine art post high school in Florence, Italy and London, England before completing her Fine Arts undergraduate degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in 2008. Funk continued her practice in Manhattan, NYC and Berlin, Germany before switching gears and moving back to her hometown of Vancouver to attend the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts and graduate with both honorable mention and a scholarship in 2010. Working in the culinary world for the past thirteen years both in Ontario and Nova Scotia has allowed Funk to bring her visual aesthetic and thematic interests together. As the daughter of a professional photographer and chef, ingredients as much as art have surrounded her senses from childhood and the evidence of her love for both art forms is manifest in her work. Funk now resides in Lunenburg, NS, and is the proud owner and chef of Shore Lunch Food Truck.
