Buttering Up Your Throwing Skills

This workshop will focus on functional thrown forms using the potter’s wheel and stoneware clay. We will explore more complex thrown pieces, as well as assembling multiple forms together. Who knows?! You might even make your own butter dish!
Discussions and demonstrations will help guide you. Different surface design techniques and glazing will be explored. It is recommended that students have some previous wheel throwing/clay experience, however, all levels of experience are welcome
This workshop is eight (3.5 hour) working sessions, twice a week, plus a one-hour pick up day.
Students should bring:
- Apron
- Water bottle
- Note book
- Pen/pencil
- Old towel
- Any personal tools you might want to bring (we suggest you label them)

Marla Benton
Marla Benton is a ceramic artist and educator based in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. Her practice spans both studio-based work and large-scale community projects, with a strong emphasis on creating interactive art that invites personal connection.
Originally from a small town in Ontario, Benton discovered her passion for clay while studying at the Ontario College of Art & Design. She later transferred to the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, where she earned her B.F.A degree in ceramics. Benton went on to complete a second degree in Education at Nipissing University.
Her work has been exhibited and published in both Canada and the United States. Benton has received several prestigious grants, including Canada Council Creation Grants, ArtsNS Grants, and ArtsSmarts Grants from the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. She has also participated in numerous artist residencies, across Canada, and has been awarded a residency in France later this year.
