Explore hand built forms such as vases, flower pots and garden sculptures. This workshop celebrates the beauty of botanical life in the home and garden. What could be better than learning to build a flower pot for that one special house plant, or a vase for your next bouquet of flowers? Using a myriad of techniques from slab and coil building to pinching, students will create one of a kind functional pieces. An emphasis on using the versatile LSA glaze collection will teach students how to glaze their ceramic pieces. Decorative techniques such as sgraffito, slip trailing, sprig moulds and carving will be used to further enrich the surfaces.

This class will cover some of the history of garden ornament through short illustrated lectures, as well as having a library of pots in class for students to inspire and demonstrate the possibilities of pot-making. All levels welcome.

This workshop is nine (three hour) working sessions, plus a one hour pick up on the tenth session.

Students should bring:

  • An apron
  • A sketchbook & pencil

Gillian Maradyn-Jowsey

Gillian Maradyn-Jowsey is an interdisciplinary artist, originally from Aylmer, Quebec, living in Lunenburg, NS. She graduated from NSCAD University in 2017 with a BFA in Ceramics.

Maradyn-Jowsey divides her time between continuing to grow her ceramic and textile based practice and engaging with the community by facilitating art-based workshops and teaching at the Lunenburg School of the Arts. Often her practice is invigorated by meaningful creative exchange and collaboration. She creates functional and sculptural work grounded

in her interest in craft and design for everyday living. When she’s not in her studio, you’ll find her digging around in her garden or getting lost in the woods with her dog Frances.

Alongside teaching at the LSA, Gillian is currently preparing for a 3 person exhibition at Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery that opens in February 2023, and is participating in a 10 month-long business program through the Acadia Entrepreneurship Center.
