English Willow Basket Making

In this workshop students will learn to make a small willow basket using traditional English construction techniques: solid bottom, randed sides with a border and handle.
To quote Heather, “I enjoy contemporary challenges, I also make wattles and garden panels for gardens and have taught many to make living fences.”
Students should bring:
- Bypass pruning shears (Not duck bill)
- Awl or bodbin
- Locking penknife style knife
- 5-6 inch round beach/river rock (weight)

Heather Sanft
Born in Halifax Nova Scotia, Heather is a seventh generation Nova Scotian and proud Canadian. Trained in Anthropology and Museum Studies at the University of British Columbia, her fieldwork apprenticeships were in Canada, France and the United Kingdom in traditional basketry. This is Heather’s second basketry workshop at the Lunenburg School of the Arts.
Sanft makes traditional willow baskets and historical reproductions for historic collections including 17th century lobsterpots for the Fortress Louisburg, and eel pots for the feature film, A Scarlett Letter.
Heather and her family farm high-bush blueberries, raspberries, grapes and other soft fruits commercially and operate Lunenburg County Winery.
