In this two-day workshop students will learn how to make a Willow Harvest Basket using traditional construction techniques: round with a solid bottom, French randed sides, and a single central handle or two side handles. Willow Harvest Baskets are simple, strong, and made to be used.

Students should bring:

  • Locking knife
  • Non duckbill pruning shears
  • An awl
  • A rounded rock about 8 inches or old iron or metal weight
  • Work apron (aprons can always be purchased at the LSA)

Heather Sanft

Heather Sanft was born in Halifax Nova Scotia and is a ninth generation Nova Scotian and proud Canadian. Trained in Anthropology and Museum Studies at the University of British Columbia, her fieldwork apprenticeships were in Canada, France and the United Kingdom in traditional basketry.

Heather makes traditional willow baskets and historical reproductions for historic collections including 17th century lobsterpots for the Fortress Louisburg, and eel pots for the feature film, A Scarlett Letter.

Heather and her family farm high-bush blueberries with a vineyard and operate Lunenburg County Winery.
