Monday to Friday, August 17 – August 21, 2026
10:00am – 4:00pm

Line, form and incredible colour – take these 3 elements and put them on canvas to express something about Beauty. This course will review basic colour theory and principles of drawing. There will be a demo each morning relating to the day’s activity. Working from life and from photos the class will create paintings that speak about the good and the beautiful in this world. Plums, pears, peonies, pine trees, pearls – (landscape, still life) there are many special things to remind us of the wonders of this Earth.

The course will explore methods of expression from traditional techniques – staining, paint application, brushstrokes – to a bit of abstraction. Each student will work at their own piece with lots of one-on-one consultation, tips and “tricks of the trade.” Come and create some Beauty at LSA this summer.

Students should bring:

  • Paint:  titanium white, ultramarine blue, cerulean blue, cadmium yellow ( medium) cadmium yellow light ( or lemon ), cadmium red, rose madder (or alizarin crimson or naphthol crimson)
  • Brushes: long handle hogs hair flats #6, #8, #10.
  • X2 – 1 inch angled house paint brushes (hardware store quality)
  • Medium: linseed oil and odorless paint thinner (available at Printer’s Corner or De Serres) + a large jar with a lid
  • Canvas: 10×10, 12×12, 16×16,18×18  and larger if you wish. Prepare to do 2 pieces per day.  We will start the week with smaller canvases and work our way up to larger.  Dollar Stores carry lots of sizes.
  • Rags, palette paper ( The LSA will also have rags and palette paper on hand.)

Note:  I suggest oil paint because it’s easier to use (yes it is) and way more luscious and juicy than acrylics – however you may bring acrylic. (It’s just the results with oil are so much more gorgeous).

Heather Sayeau received her Bachelor of Fine Art and Bachelor of Education from NSCAD University in Halifax in 1981, and taught Fine and Media Arts at NSCAD alongside her practice for thirty years. Sayeau is an oil painter with a focus on landscape, still life, and the figure. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions since 1982 and her work appears in public and private collections across Canada and abroad.

“I am a painter. Painting is what I do and what I long to do when I am not painting… Teaching is the wonderful offspring of painting; sharing my experiences, challenges, successes, and defeats with people. Learning the ‘toolbox’ of techniques opens the door to oneself and I am always delighted to watch students grow a new facet of their creative self. I have had the privilege to instruct students of all ages. I like to work with each student individually — helping them hone each one’s unique expression.”
