6:00pm – 9:00pm
Get your hands dirty and discover the joy of hand-built pottery—no wheel required! In this upbeat, encouraging class, you’ll explore slab building, coiling, sculpting, and glazing, with a fresh project each week to spark your creativity. I’ll demonstrate a new technique each session, giving you a chance to practice new skills while leaving plenty of room to play and experiment. This semester features all-new projects, so even returning students will find plenty of innovative ideas to try. Whether it’s your first time with clay, or you want to build on what you know, you’ll have the chance to learn, create, and see your ideas take shape from start to finish!
This workshop is comprised of 8 working sessions (3hrs) PLUS one final pick-up day (1hr). We will be using red stoneware clay.
Please note:
- Students should bring a notebook, a pen/pencil and wear comfy clothes that they don’t mind getting dirty.

Melanie Dorion
Melanie Dorion graduated from NSCAD University in 2018 with a BFA, majoring in Ceramics. She spent her university summers as a studio assistant to Joan Bruneau in Lunenburg and has since developed her practice through exhibitions and international residencies at Medalta Potteries (AB), the Women’s Studio Workshop (NY), and Guldagergaard (Denmark). Specializing in handbuilding, Melanie creates both functional pieces and installations, often coil-building large forms or slab-building tableware. She loves clay for its tactile nature and the challenge of making work that is both beautiful and functional, and is passionate about inspiring students to explore the endless possibilities of handbuilding.
