Monday to Friday, August 4 – August 8, 2025
10:00am – 4:00pm
This is a course for people who want to draw and paint, whether on location or in the classroom, with confidence and enthusiasm! No experience is necessary — all ages and skill levels are welcome! Working individually, but with a creative group, we will explore the wonderful Town of Lunenburg — its picture-postcard architecture, its vibrant and historic waterfront — and create engaging visual stories that capture its special interests and unique cultural vitality. One morning will be spent sketching from the deck of a boat!
We’ll sketch using a variety of different media, typically beginning with pencil to set the composition, then add expressive detail and vibrancy with ink and watercolour. Also, tips and techniques for adding people to your scenes to really bring your sketches to life.
Students should bring:
- Sketchbook or Paper Pad (A good-quality cold-pressed watercolor pad (9”x12”, 140 lb) or a mixed-media sketchbook. Recommended brands: Arches, Canson, Waterford, Fabriano. A wire-bound sketchbook is ideal as it lies flat.)
- Water Jar/s (I have a rubber collapsible one and then just another small plastic container.)
- Spray Bottle (Helps reactivate paints and keeps paper moist.)
- Plastic Water Bottle (For refilling water as needed.)
- Masking Tape
- Pencils – 2B or 4B graphite pencils (pencils are also available at the school).
- A Fine-line Ink Marker (Sometimes it’s fun to do your initial sketch in a colour pencil (I like Orange or Blue); also, If you have watercolour pencils bring them along.)
- An Eraser (but you’ll learn to not use it!)
- Brushes: There are 2 key ones to have, but bring what you have of course: 1 Flat, 1”or 3/4” and, 2) A medium Round; numbering is not consistent, so aim for one that is approx 1/4”–3/8” thick and comes to a fine point when wet.)
- Paint / Pigments: Better quality paints will give you better results; so paint from companies such as Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, Schmincke are good, but pricey! They all have less expensive offers, so choose what fits your budget. Van Gogh makes good-quality student paint. Tubes or Pans? Paint in tubes is best. You can get more saturated/bolder colours because you use less water to work them. But pans can be more portable in a small pocket-size box! I use both and sometimes when a pan gets used up in my travel box, I will fill it with paint from tubes. Winsor & Newton/Cotman makes a simple, but good, student grade kit.
- Any other preferred sketching media, i.e., watercolour pencils, or crayons, or markers.
- A small foldable stool or cushion to sit on.
- Weather appropriate clothing, ie. a sun hat
