This workshop was so popular we had to add a second date!

Want to learn how to use oil paints but are a bit intimidated? Are you a long-time oil painter but want a fume-free alternative? Join this one (1) day introduction to water mixable oil paints with artist Suzanne Shortt who made the switch from traditional oils 20 years ago and has never-ever-regretted it.

Water-mixable oils (also known as water-miscible or water-soluble) are oil paints that can be thinned and cleaned up with water. They are better for your health as there is no need for chemical solvents. As a bonus, water mixable oils have a faster drying time, about 50% faster. Because of this quality, they’re excellent for painting layers. If you already have a huge collection of traditional oils, don’t worry as they can be intermixed. Come and pick up techniques and some secrets to get started.

A variety of water mixable oil painting techniques will be introduced and materials will be supplied.

Students should bring:

  • An apron or work clothes
  • A subject that inspires you to use as reference for your painting (a photo, a sketch, object, etc.)

Suzanne Shortt

Suzanne Shortt has been a professional artist and educator for over thirty years. After graduating with degrees in both Fine Art and Education from Queen’s University, she has lived and worked as an artist all over the world. Starting as a volunteer in Ghana, she has been inspired by vibrant scenes in Africa, Asia and Europe. Her work in oils draws on the cultural and aesthetic diversity of this international life. Colour is her passion. Flat areas of bold colour and negative space charge the narrative of the canvases in her exhibitions. Woven through the work is an optimistic, life-affirming spirit. Suzanne has taught art in different contexts alongside her studio work. She studied Animation at Sheridan College and has also been involved with graphic design and branding projects.

She moved to Lunenburg in the summer of 2023. Working alongside her husband, this year Suzanne is beginning a new art, design and learning business – Big Blue House Studio.
