This course introduces stained glass using the copper foil method. Although intended for hobbyists, the techniques learned are the same used by entrepreneurs who make and sell their works. Students will learn to cut glass, foil glass, solder glass and display glass projects with some insights into colour theory and design tips along the way. Students will begin by creating a small stained glass suncatcher to practise their new skills. They will then be guided through designing and creating an original approximately 12” × 12” stained glass piece inspired loosely by the geometry of a quilt pattern. Students will take home both projects and an appreciation for this unique artistic medium.
Students should bring:
- Apron (aprons can always be purchased from the LSA)
- If you have your own soldering iron please bring it along.

Terry Smith-Lamothe
Terry Smith-Lamothe is an internationally-known glass artist with 45 years’ experience designing and fabricating large-scale windows. He was instructor in introductory stained glass at NSCAD’s Adult Education Division. Five windows at St. Norbert’s Catholic Church in Lunenburg are among his many commissions in NS and NB. His most visited window is the Deportation of the Acadians Memorial at Grand Pré National Historic Site. He is also a licensed architect whose Halifax firm, Architech, Ltd., was incorporated in 1993. In 2002, he designed the new Visitor Reception Centre at Grand Pré, too. His family has had a cottage on Sherbrooke Lake, Lunenburg County, since 1995.
