The Tactile Notebook and the Written Word
Registration
Sandra Brownlee
Monday to Friday , July 3 – July 7, 2023
10:00am – 4:00pm
This five-day workshop is open to all levels and welcomes former students as well as new. The main objective of the workshop is to support students in establishing a dynamic, tactile notebook practice that is meaningful and rewarding. Students will use their notebook as a reflective space in which to document and give expression to their daily experiences.
Motivated by haptic considerations, they will use their senses to stimulate and awaken perception, guide the making process, and enhance the way they communicate both visually and verbally. Throughout the workshop, students will create tactile pages, playing with materials, techniques, and words to make concrete the vital elements of their sensory experience.
Students should bring:
- Hard Cover Blank Book – I mostly use a Canson Mix Media spiral bound book, 5.5” x 8.5”, 98 lbs. weight paper but feel free to use any other brand or size with blank/unlined paper that can accommodate mixed media. You can bring a book that you have already started using as long as there are lots of empty pages left.
- Fabric to cover your book with, recycled or new
- A meaningful object or image (something that has personal significance- this is for inspiration and will not be altered)
- Sewing thread, needle & straight pins
- Two pairs of scissors- paper and cloth
- Pen, pencil, eraser and pencil sharpener
- Glue – UHU Stick & white glue
- Miscellaneous art supplies you already own and like to work with such as coloured pencils, water colours/paint, brushes, oil pastels, crayons, etc.
- Miscellaneous embellishment supplies you already own such as buttons, beads, fabric fragments, embroidery threads, etc.
- An apron
